Optimizing conflict for creativity

When you read the word conflict do you immediately think of the word resolution? Why are we instinctively drawn to trying to avoid and resolve conflict when research shows that the right types of conflict are key to producing better ideas?.

We may not be comfortable with conflict, but as creative evangelists it’s our job to encourage it when appropriate.

This workshop will help you understand the roots and types of conflict, your personal conflict styles, and give you simple rules to build conflict confidence. We will break down the essential components of positive conflict into easily accessible, fun techniques, transforming you into a creative conflict master.

The Skinny: 3 things you will get from this session

  • Understand which types of conflict can accelerate creative output and which can kill it
  • Learn tools that can generate healthy conflict and cool it off when it goes too far
  • Discover your own and others’ conflict styles and when to try borrow another approach

Paul Fleming has a unique perspective on work. As VP of Fuel with Combustion, a butt-kicking learning and development company, he helps clients hone ninja-level skills in creativity and leadership. In pursuit of a PhD, he researches how start-ups come into being to share what we can learn from them. He also serves on the Advisory Board of Management Studies at Humber Business School and the Leader Project at the Ivey School of Business (where he’s worked on-the-ground with entrepreneurs in Haiti and Lithuania).
